Hardware Upgrades

By webmaster - Posted on 16 August 2009

In this article we'll discuss few important upgrade options and the least expensive route to do that.

Highest priority would go to RAM, put as much RAM as you can. It will depend on the amount of slots that are built into your mother board. If it only has two then, you have to see what's the largest available chip that's compatible with your chip set / motherboard. If it's cost effective than go ahead and purchase two memory modules.

The next best upgrade is the hard drive. If you constantly download and / or work with large files on a daily bases, that not only wears out the hard drive which will eventually crash, but it also gets fragmented and cluttered which in the long run slows everything down dramatically. New hard drives usually have better technology and especially caching mechanisms in place. Which in itself is kind of like a hard drive with it's own internal RAM. This option is not always the best and that's the CPU. In most cases because CPU and motherboard have to be upgraded simultaneously unless you've purchased one of the earliest models of the chip set for a specific motherboard, the CPU speed increase will be extremely marginal. Almost always this leads to a new computer. In some cases you can take all the older parts such as CD/DVD burner and the hard drive maybe a video card and move it to a new computer which in essence is a new Case, new power supply, new motherboard, new ram, and the new CPU.
