Internet Speed Test

By webmaster - Posted on 09 October 2009

There are many websites that allow you to test your internet's speed by sending you a large file and measuring how fast the download or upload will take.

There is one potential problem though. If their server's internet speed is LOWER than yours you will see inaccurate numbers. For example:

A speed test server on T1 line is 1.5Mbps. You'll be running your speed tests via your home's DSL which is 0.7Mbps or 700Kbps. In that case you will most likely get an accurate speed results, because your internet speed is only half of the available bandwidth of server's.

Let's say company's test server is on T1 and you have a cable which is working at 10Mbps. In that case your Internet connection is significantly higher in bandwidth and you will see a reading of 1.5Mbps instead of 10Mbps simply because you've over saturated server line and it's showing you their maximum capacity and not yours.

In order to get an accurate test reading you'll need to find a website that allows you to test 10Mbps to 100Mpbs or even 1Gbps / 1000Mbps circuit.

One of the best websites for speed testing that we've come across is:

http://speakeasy.net

It's very fast (latency) it has high bandwidth which is an essential part when you're running an internet speed test from cablevision or optimum which allows you to download at speeds of 30Mpbs and higher.

If you know any other good high capacity internet speed test website please leave us a comment and we'll update this article.
